Blue Zebra Photo Lab Opens In Allston

In the rush to demonize Craigslist, let us not forget that the site is actually useful for more than booty call ads. For example, where else could you find a second-hand darkroom door only a Zip-car ride away?

Luckily, the co-owners of Allston’s new Blue Zebra Photo Lab won’t have to answer that question. Andrea Katz and Katty Walsh spotted a swiveling door for their photo lab on Craigslist a few months back and scooped it up for $75.

In addition to being endlessly entertaining, the door seals off a hand-built lab facility with B&W developing stations and four photo enlargers (two Beseler 23c’s and two Omega D’s, which handle medium-format prints).

If you’re one of the chemical-stained purists who still churns out photo prints by hand, then you probably already know that options are limited for developing prints manually in Boston. Outside of studios and universities, Blue Zebra is about the only stem-to-stern darkroom available for public use. Hours are still getting banged out, but you can use the Interwebs to get in touch with the owners to find out about darkroom availability.

Blue Zebra also houses a B&W photo gallery, which is currently showcasing a mixed set of prints from friends and family and some debut work from beginners who jumped into the darkroom for the first time last week. Keep an eye out for new work going up this summer — there’s talk of getting permission from photographer JJ Gonson to print a limited run of Elliot Smith photographs from original negatives.

Of course, we couldn’t resist asking about the name — Walsh says that Blue Zebra came to her brother, Marty, in a dream one night and stuck after he insisted on using it as a working title for the lab.
