After being rescued from the brink of extinction a decade ago, the Moleskine notebook has been reborn as the PBR of stationery goods. A marketing campaign from Italian publisher Modo & Modo cast the oilcloth journal as a requisite for travelers, writers, artists and otherwise impoverished people, and the company's popularity has since mushroomed into a cult following.
The mythology surrounding Moleskine touts two centuries of storied users, including Breton, Hemingway, Sartre, Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh, who are all reputed to have captured their fleeting moments of inspiration in the notebooks.
Standing at the foot of this tradition is Cambridge artist ...

Shephard Fairey Launches Boston Street Campaign
Art | (1)
We got a hot tip from Clarence Smith Jr. (Do You Know Clarence?™) that Shephard Fairey has been "handling OBEY business in our streets all week."
Designs from the renowned street artist have been spotted in Harvard Square, Somerville and South Station, to name a few places.
A veteran of guerilla marketing campaigns for Pepsi, Hasbro, and Netscape, Fairey will be debuting his first installation at the ICA this February.
Check out these snaps from Boston's Hargo of the images popping up around town:

Fort Point Open Studios Sampler
Art, Events | (1)
It looks like Davis Square, the "new South End", has already been usurped by Fort Point as a haven for Boston's artsy types. Over the last couple weeks, every Boston mag has published an article about the restaurants and galleries springing up there.
If you've been looking for an excuse to head out to the East side and see what all the buzz is about, the Fort Point studios will be open to visitors this weekend.
I raced down to 300 Summer Street after work yesterday to catch the tail-end of the group show (Brighton to South Station in 30 min. during ...
ManningAve x Honkfest!
Art | (1)
Photographer Seth Johnson sent over a couple snaps from Honkfest! in Davis Square last weekend. In the interest of full disclosure, Seth is a friend of ours, and he is the man.
You can see more of his work at ManningAve.
We really dig the transparent eyeball quality in his photos. Seth has a knack for observing his subjects without changing them (quantum physics be damned).
Our opinion is also influenced by the fact that Seth is the illest home-brewer in the GBA. We're already looking forward to the Thanksgiving cider.
I’m Not Like Other Guys x O•H+T Gallery
Art | (1)
Dan the Man took us over to the South End on Friday to check out the SoWa artist guild and the galleries at 450 Harrison Ave. We scoped the goods at Bobby From Boston's gentleman's store and then stumbled into the O•H+T Gallery, where we found this hidden gem from Ben Sloat.
"I'm Not Like Other Guys" examines the cult of celebrity surrounding Michael Jackson and his "bizarre and tragic personal transformation from black boy to a white man/woman". The exhibition features paintings, digital prints, a view-master reel, and a stained glass piece depicting a scene from Thriller.
The point-and-shoot ...
‘Paint It Now’ x Distillery Gallery
Art | (0)
It's hard to believe Thomas Buildmore when he says that 'Paint It Now' is not about street art. The fluctuating collage of wheat-paste characters and graffiti stencils plucked from Boston's alleyways and transported into South Boston's Distillery Gallery has, at the very least, an urban aesthetic.
But Buildmore insists the cadre of young "street" artists who contribute to the project can't be pigeonholed by the medium they work in. Continue Reading...
Art On The Wind installation in Brookline

Boston artist Katrina Majkut says she’s been a “green” person her whole life.
When she was 8, Majkut wrote a book report about deforestation for fun. Her parents grew food in a huge vegetable garden outside the house and organized yard sales so their old junk wouldn’t wind up in the trash.
“I was always a very crafty kid and I had to use what was around me,” Majkut says.
It comes as no surprise, then, that the 26-year-old’s latest installation is a testament to recycling. Continue Reading...
Ice Cream People x The Milky Way (7/28)
Art | (0)
The last thing I expected to see at an event intended to celebrate the underdog of mythological creatures was a crowd of people waiting to get in. I guess it goes to show that you should never underestimate the allure of ice cream - or ice cream people - on a hot summer evening.
Artist and ice-cream-person enthusiast Brian Butler understands just that, and as the mastermind behind IceCreamPeople.org, he was host to the project's first public event Monday night at the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain. Continue Reading...
