Yes, there really is a Hungarian footwear giant. Tisza made a name for itself in the 50s and 60s producing army boots for Soviet-block troops before gaining popularity among Hungarian youth. The company's signature sport shoe, the Compakt, reached US shores when trade opened up in the 70s, and continued to sell well in eastern Europe for decades.
