Concepts also hosted House of Pain on St. Paddy’s Day for a shoe release, which was the breeding ground for this heart-wrenching YouTube clip of a confused woman who just needs a pair of comfortable shoes.

The store put together a wrap-up of the Adidas Campus 80 event, featuring interviews with the band while they were getting trimmed up by a barber. After watching it, I think there’s a lot of potential in the barbershop confessional style.

    DATELINE: 1995 – Fueled by liberal reform and technological progress, the world prepares for a golden age of prosperity. Eazy-E makes peace with Dre and Ice Cube, Coolio rides to the beach on a chariot of dreams, and the Quad City DJs look forward to a long, lucrative career as musical innovators.

    Life was so simple in those pre-Kazaam days, when all you needed was a dot-com and a loose business model to make it big. But even the downturn-cum-recession-cum-depression-cum-apocalyptic-cluster-fuck of 2008 hasn’t stripped away the last vestige of those happier times.

    Buried deep in an overstock warehouse somewhere in the US, a retail time capsule was discovered with 65 vintage snapback Starter caps, complete with original tags. And these ripstop, suede, wool, and cotton gems have, in Indiana Jones-esque fashion, fallen into the hands of Harvard Square’s Proletariat.

    The store says they only have one or two caps per team, so if you’re interested, don’t ask questions — just start walking to Cambridge now. Believe me, you don’t want to look like a bandwagon fan when the Bruins take it home this year.

    Our man on the inside at Nike(town) gave us the heads-up on this new collaboration between Boston designer Mayan Tamang and Hungarian footwear giant Tisza.

    Yes, there really is a Hungarian footwear giant. Tisza made a name for itself in the 50s and 60s producing army boots for Soviet-block troops before gaining popularity among Hungarian youth.

    The company’s signature sport shoe, the Compakt, reached US shores when trade opened up in the 70s, and continued to sell well in eastern Europe for decades. Today, the Compakt is the equivalent of an OG shelltop in Hungary.

    The MTP sneaker, limited to 100 pairs, is handmade from genuine Italian leather and individually numbered on the underside of the tongue.

    Mayan’s design team thankfully chose to forego the all-over print featured in the promo shoot and matching fitted, and the end result is a thoroughly wearable sneaker — a refreshing change to the sneaker collabo scene.

    We called around Friday afternoon and there are still about 20 pairs at the UGHH.com store on Huntington Avenue and 12-14 at The Attic in Central Square. The shoes are also available through the Karmaloop online store.

    We got in touch with Mayan a few months back to ask about his background and his work. After living with his Nepalese father for seven years, he returned to Boston a “student of the world”, and the threads of Mayan’s multicultural ancestry run through his designs.

     

     

    How did you get into customizing/designing clothing and sneakers? What was the progression from designing for other labels to starting your own line?

    MT: I got into designing clothes from being a part of the graffiti and street art scene in Boston. A lot of my friends and people in my neighborhood are artists, and I find creativity and ideas by spending my time sharing concepts with them. My mother is an artist as well.

    I get inspiration from B-boying, hip-hop and all street cultures. I’ve been designing and freelancing for seven years for independent and corporate brands. I finally got sick of designing for other people, keeping their needs before mine.

    I’ve been interested in art and design since high school, and I always knew that I wanted to launch my own clothing line. And now the brand is continually progressing with my team, comprised of: my wife, Mridula; CB4; J Schlo; and the Floorlords.

    The streetwear industry has grown exponentially in recent years. Does the expansion of urban culture into the suburbs dilute its authenticity, or are you happy to see new markets opening up for your designs?

    MT: Of course I’m happy. We need support to keep this movement alive. Without support we cannot survive, live our dreams, and continue to empower one another. This brand is for everyone.

    What is unique about the Boston experience that a national audience hasn’t seen?

    MT: So many people are hungry here. It’s the home of the haters. You have to outsign people. Being a B-boy, I’m used to battling.

  • Not to be outdone, Concepts debuted a fresh site with weekly updates, including shoe releases and other news. It’s a little too “conceptual” for it’s own good, but we’re happy to see them boost their web presence.
  • Boston design company Dance Party Massacre has new designs rolling out this month, just in time for Halloween. Check out the release party at Harper’s Ferry on Thursday night!

    Actually, these scenesters were camping out for Johnny Cupcakes’ fourth annual Halloween t-shirt release, dubbed There’s Something In The Cupcake Mix.

    The group at the head of the line rolled in Tuesday afternoon — three days before the 9:00 p.m. release on Friday.

My first glimpse into the sneaker game came a few years ago when my friend Caitlyn introduced me to her boyfriend. He was working at Karmaloop before it started turning a profit and he was into “collecting vintage Nikes.”

    I didn’t give the sneaker thing much thought until I heard about a hidden shoe store on Mass Ave. As it turned out, sneaker collecting was already reaching fever pitch when Bodega opened up, and one of the best shoe resources available back then was being produced right here in Boston.

    The Weekly Drop, a podcast produced by Jeff Carvalho, Rob Heppler and Frank the Butcher from Harvard Square’s Concepts, provided a weekly dose of industry news and interviews for sneakerheads around the country. The show had a two-year run pumping out fresh content, but it’s been months since we’ve heard anything new from the group, and I assumed the Drop had fallen by the wayside.

     

    It looks like the show may be returning to the web, however, reincarnated on YouTube. Frank and Jeff Carvalho released a new episode this month from the Agenda industry show in San Diego. The clip features a review of new fitted hats scheduled for release in spring ’09, including an expansive set from Freshjive. Don’t miss the ‘Liberty or Death’ cap at the end — the Ben Franklin collabo is unbeatable.

    A lot of good projects fizzle out fast on the internet (kicks-1-7 anybody?), but let’s hope this is the start of a Weekly Drop comeback.

     

    Here’s what Frank and Dennis Todisco (Karmaloop) had to say about the Magic trade show in Las Vegas:

    Frank: (One) thing I cannot wait to pass is this 80′s look/craze. It just does not look right. These kids are out here wearing stuff that was not cool first time through in the 80′s and or combined styles from the early, mid , and late 80-early 90′s…. the stuff they are throwing together is a mess. I cant cosign anyone who is trying to do this right now. Not a good look at all. I mean think of how much the styles have changed over the past 4 or 5 years. Now picture some kids trying to piece that back together 15 years from now and what it would look like. We would have a bunch of skinny jean, throwback jersey, streetwear fitted, SB rocking kids runnin around talking about they are doing the vintage 2000 look….. adn those of us that actually experienced it would look at them like they dont get it, much like we are looking at these wannabe 80′s babies.

    I am honestly happy about what I seen at MAGIC though…. Looks like everyone is cleaning it up and becoming more mature in 2009. Def a good look.

    Dennis: (. . . ) dudes out there are forcin it hard on that 80s tip. Check Arab Parrot for some funny shit of what dudes were actually wearing out there. The game is definitely changing for the better and yeah ’09 is looking way up from everything I saw. I was way more impressed this Magic than last years for sure.

    We’ve been watching Grand in Somerville with growing interest. The store sells a hand-curated offering of clothing, furniture and accessories.

    Grand launched their webstore last week and if you can’t make it out to Somerville, you can still browse a huge selection of their products online.

    The store has also been taking part in some cool events, and recently held a movie showing as part of the Bicycle Film Festival.

    Local artist Chris Piascik will be showcasing a collection of his paintings at Grand for the next several weeks. Scheming Against Myself will open on Friday night, 6-9 p.m. at the store.
