Just as the Internet has been a major contributor to print media’s slow demise, the expanding availability of television shows online has also been freaking out major TV networks for some time. Regardless of how one happens to watch their favorite shows, however, one Brooklyn-based duo has come across a way to breathe new life into the otherwise straightforward medium.

Jeff Curtin and Adam Schatz, who make up the band Previously on LOST, play what they’ve dubbed “recap-rock.” Each week they write and record a new song based on that week’s episode of the ABC series LOST.

After building up a solid repertoire of songs and generating some fans with their unique style of music, the band is gearing up for a summer tour of the Northeast that will start in New York and make its way to the Middle East in Cambridge on Tuesday, June 9.

So how did this whole project begin?

Adam: We wanted to start a band that already had a big fanbase waiting for us. We both loved Lost and woke up one night in a cold sweat with the idea, and tried calling each other to tell of the plan, but since we were both trying to call we were only getting busy signals. That carried on for two weeks until we finally ran into each other in person, and the idea for Previously On Lost was born.

How did you guys meet, how’d you each get into music, and what drove you to ultimately make music together?

Jeff: We met working on a space-ballet called Champollion (www.myspace.com/champollion) and discovered we were both huge Lost fans (abc.go.com/primetime/lost). I’m from DC and grew up playing along to grunge bands and go-go music, but also did a bit of jazz, musical theater and church music.

Adam: My parents pushed music on me at a young age, and I’ve been playing saxophone and keys since I was 8. Somewhere around my freshman year of high school I decided I really just wanted to play in a bunch of bands all the time. I still haven’t gotten sick of it.

Did any specific bands or musicians serve as inspiration for your own music?

Adam: Jeff and I each have our personal inspirations, so if we lump them together it looks something like The Flaming Lips, The Band, Patience and Prudence, Disney musicals, Bobby Darrin, Frank Zappa and Phil Spector.

But truly, we never talked about it. We just sat down and tried to write a song about the episode of LOST we just saw, and the music was influenced by the subject matter. I think that’s partly what makes our sound so unique.

What is your songwriting process?

Adam: We each watch the episode individually, upwards of 50 times. I’ll watch once with my eyes closed, once hanging upside down, once under water, and in as many other environments until I have truly absorbed the essence of the episode. I can’t speak for Jeff, all I know is that every time I come over to write a song, there’s completely new furniture in his living room, and there’s a vague smell of smoke. Once together, we tackle the whole project in a day. 13 hours average, to write and record and produce the song, with a 50 minute barbecue break somewhere in the middle. Often we try to find a theme throughout the episode, in order to fuel the lyric writing process, but sometimes it’s not that simple, and it can take 4 or 5 hours just to get the write words. We’ll be working out melodic and musical ideas as we go, on a plethora of casio keyboards and glockenspiels, but we don’t truly tackle the music until the lyrics are near completion.

What sort of reception has your band had online, touring or otherwise?

Jeff: During season 4 we were doing a weekly challenge with ourselves to write and record a song for each episode in 1 day. Since the beginning, we had great online support by blogs and Lost fans. Our first show was in New York a few days after the Season 4 finale and a few hundred people showed up ready to have an island dance party with us! And some people even knew the lyrics to our songs! After we started playing out more with the large band we put together (more people on stage = more ridiculous and fun) we got to a place where it made sense to go to the West Coast. We started a few traditions at our live shows like bringing a giant poster of JJ Abrams to hang with on stage during the show and using tons of props. We crash a huge home-made cardboard plane to start each show and people love destroying it with us.

Any legal action from LOST creator J.J. Abrams yet?

Adam: All we know is that he knows we exist, and he thinks we’re funny. We expected to hear from his lawyers once video started surfacing that showed us performing with a blown up poster of his head on stage with us, but no word from them. We’re jonesing for a high profile lawsuit like that to take us to the next level. Look what it did for R. Kelly!

Clearly this can’t be the only TV program you guys watch… what other shows are your favorites, and what was it about LOST specifically that appealed to you?

Jeff: We love anything J.J., beginning with Felicity. In the past, Star Trek, Twin Peaks ruled the land and now it’s True Blood, Battelstar Galactica, and Big Love for me. Lost is great because it’s up there with the best sci-fi soap operas ever made. And it’s in our present, we’re living it!

Adam: I love Lost because the show immediately grabbed hold of you, and the creators take advantage of that by introducing new elements. It started off as a simple cast-away show, and quickly a sci fi thriller element began to seep in. Then they laid time travel on us, and now the idea of possession. It’s pretty awesome. Other than LOST, I’m a big fan of Law and Order SVU, Top Chef, Cash Cab, and Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

Any thoughts on the season finale?

Adam: I thought it was the best episode of the season. So much action, so much drama, so much heartbreak. What more could you want? And we FINALLY got to see what Rose and Bernard have been up to. I wish that fifteen minutes of every episode would be dedicated to just the two of them…talking. Really though, there was a suspicious lack of Daniel Farrady. I know he’s dead, but that never stopped them before.

What sort of stuff will you be up to until LOST comes back?

Jeff: We like to keep busy in the off-season. I do the sound for Pitchfork TV, and we’ve got a lot lined up for the rest of the year. Mini docs and creative-location recordings with a lot of great bands. I’m planning to write a new musical, but it’s a secret right now.

Adam: While Jeff works on his new musical, I’m cooking up ideas for Law and Order The SVUsical. I’ve got one more year at NYU ahead of me, a jazz saxophone major (HAH!). I also run a website and organzation www.SearchandRestore.com, which is dedicated to bringing the best live jazz in New York City to more people than ever, designed for folks who want to know more but don’t know where to start.

Looking at your other projects, you’ve got Disney children’s songs, an original space ballet… what else have you considered pursuing musically? Anything you tried that didn’t pan out so well?

Adam: I think everything we’ve attempted so far has really lived up to it’s potential. I attribute that to the fact that we truly care about what we do, so there’s no half-assing, just sincere effort. We have a lot of new plans in the works, but we’re keeping quiet for now. You can expect an album written and recorded entirely on a commercial airline flight. We’re also in the lab non stop trying to create a new breed of Muppet. But those are just a few ideas.

Which LOST character would you want in your band and why?

Jeff: Sayid would be a great addition cause Naveen Andrews shreds on guitar in real life and plus the girls love him. He’s the only guy on Lost who could beat up a Ninja Turtle. When we played in LA, Sterling Beaumon who plays “young Ben” on the show sat in with us for a few songs. He was great!

Adam: Or Charlie. Well…ghost Charlie. Ghosts rock harder anyways.

Which one wouldn’t you want to tour or perform with?

Adam: Probably Bernard. He’d just want to play hippie hand drum all the time, and we can’t be having that.

The big question… the next season of LOST is it — last in the series. What do you think is going to happen and what’s next for you two after the series ends?

Jeff: Since everyone was just blown up by a hydrogen bomb, we expect they’ll all have to return as zombies to hangout for one more season of feasting on brains. And it’s gonna turn out that Jacob is Aaron from the future who time traveled back hundreds of years to learn the ancient art of looming.

After the series ends, anytime we play and revive the spirit of Lost, it will hit with the power of Pink Floyd reunion tour plus an H-bomb. We shared a radio hour with Michael Giacchino who does the music for LOST as well as many Pixar movies and most things JJ Abrams worked on. He’s amazing. When Pixar decides to make a classic-style movie musical with singing again, we’re gonna try our best to get the gig and team up with him.

Thanks for your time, guys — anything else you want to say to our readers?

Adam: Be sure to check ABC.com to see the LOST Untangled action figure music video for the season 5 finale, with music provided by yours truly, Previously On Lost.
