Interview: Andy from the Wild Sextet (mp3)
We hopped on the 66 and rode down to Brookline Village to catch the jazz combo at Matt Murphy’s Pub.
The house band, the Wild Sextet, performs every Thursday night, 11-12, followed by the Round Midnight workshop — an open jam session that lures a talented mix of students and local musicians to perform.
A dark, cozy nook behind the bar houses a drum kit and an upright bass, and the horn players brush shoulders with the crowd as they circle around the rhythm section.
Tucked beneath a cap and plaid shirt, frontman Andy Voelker angles his sax and licks his lips. He launches the melody into the air and hangs it over a row of shuffling heads before cradling it back down.
Voelker grins easy and laughs across the bar between sets, welcoming a mix of regulars and first-time players for the late-night session to follow.
