We hopped on the 66 and rode down to Brookline Village to catch the jazz combo at Matt Murphy’s Pub.
The house band, the Wild Sextet, performs every Thursday night, 11-12, followed by the Round Midnight workshop — an open jam session that lures a talented mix of students and local musicians to perform.
A dark, cozy nook behind the bar houses a drum kit and an upright bass, and the horn players brush shoulders with the crowd as they circle around the rhythm section.
Tucked beneath a cap and plaid shirt, frontman Andy Voelker angles his sax and licks his lips. He launches the melody into the air and hangs it over a row of shuffling heads before cradling it back down.
Voelker grins easy and laughs across the bar between sets, welcoming a mix of regulars and first-time players for the late-night session to follow.
Check out these live recordings of the Round Midnight workshop, taken with our new Zoom H4 field recorder:

Wedged between 10-hour shifts and facing a soggy commute in the morning, a wiser man than myself may have chosen to stay home.
“But it’s Sunday,” I reasoned. “I’ll be back by midnight. Things can’t get that crazy on a Sunday.”
Six hours later, I was helping a man with no shoes [...]
Our man on the inside at Nike(town) gave us the heads-up on this new collaboration between Boston designer Mayan Tamang and Hungarian footwear giant Tisza.
Yes, there really is a Hungarian footwear giant. Tisza made a name for itself in the 50s and 60s producing army boots for Soviet-block troops before gaining popularity among Hungarian youth.
